Matheran is an old hill station of India. It was developed by the British and during those times, both, the British and the Parsi  used to spend their summer time at this hill station in order to escape the relatively hot weather of Mumbai (then Bombay). The colonial influence is the reason why you would spot such big bungalows with large verandahs all around the place, although most of them are in their ruins now. While exploring Matheran, you can also visit the Parsi Cemetery which is ideal for a quiet time. Matheran also has a series of promontories and you can take a tour to these points for a scenic view of the Sahyadri Hills.

You can fly to Matheran from Mumbai, take an Indian Railway train from Neral or travel by road from Pune or Mumbai. The mountain railway from Neral to Matheran is slow, however. A couple of days is best to explore Matheran. You can also head to the neighboring attractions after a good expedition of the place. Lonavla and Khandala are two nearby popular hill stations, you can further explore. So, enjoy your holidays to the fullest and have a great time.
